Hi Paul,
I was so thrilled to see how wheelchair accessible the Somenos Boardwalk really is!
Many times driving the TCH north I would sight the start of the path leading through the trees to the boardwalk into the marsh, tempting me to venture out. While it looked accessible flags of doubt wavered my enthusiasm. Years of experience have taught me to be sceptical. Then I met Bob Isbister who enthusiastically offered to give me the guided tour. I was delighted with the path, the boardwalk and the royal treatment. Everything is terrific; the path of finely crushed rock, the easy ramped grade onto the boardwalk, the names of contributors, pullout viewing areas, and the information plaques. I am especially happy about being able to actually see over the railing! In 30 years of using a wheelchair this is a first! Yeah!!! Balconies, decks, viewing platforms in theatres, ferries, and parks are all at eye level, impeding the sight of the seated. Thank you for listening, and considering these factors that make such a difference to people who use wheelchairs. Seeing and hearing the grasses undulate, the variety of birds and plant life is special. I look forward to the seasons of the marsh. Thanks to all for the vision and hard work. Sincerely, Theresa Burke-Gaffney |
