The Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society (SMWS) has now raised $100,00 to continue building our Open Air Classroom (OAC) project! SMWS 20th AGM - Wednesday May 5, 7pm at SMWS Headquarters, 109 Ingram Street, Duncan
The Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society (SMWS) has now raised $100,00 to continue building our Open Air Classroom (OAC) project, a 1300 foot elevated boardwalk with pullouts, platforms, and interpretive signage. Construction of the next phase will start mid June using local contractors, materials, and volunteers. $50,000 is still needed to complete the loop back to the highway. Efforts are already underway to secure the additional funding. The community can help in a big way by donating to the Birds and Boardwalk campaign. We will say thanks by adding your name to the ranks of the 650+ engraved planks already done.
Other good news is that both our Drinkwater dock and OAC boardwalk survived unscathed from this past winter floods. The dock at Drinkwater was, at the highest flood, higher than the walkway to it. Our new elevated OAC boardwalk flooded to the handrails but did not budge from it’s roots. Imagine the flood damage if much of the floodwaters weren’t held back by the enormous storage capacity of Somenos Marsh and lake. For those wanting to learn more about the SMWS please come join us for our 20th Annual General Meeting Wednesday May 5, 7pm at SMWS Headquarters, 109 Ingram Street in downtown Duncan where we share the office space with Fletcherfoto. We have some exciting board opportunities if your specialty is in biology or education. There will be a slide show featuring 20 years in Somenos and the business meeting will be short. Please note that it is BYOC (bring your own chair) event. Please visit www.somenosmarsh.com for more info on any of the above. Download the Marsh Notes here . |
