Somenos Marsh Open Air Classroom (OAC)

The OAC can be accessed by car by turning into the parking lot a short distance north on the Trans-Canada Highway just after the Beverly Street intersection. Look for the long brown fence and kiosk. Give plenty of notice that you are turning in.

The OAC is a place for learning, rest, exercise, and wildlife watching. Flat gravel trails lead either to the Cowichan Wheels viewing platform and then up the stairs to the top of the viewing tower, or out to the elevated ‘Watts Walk’ wheelchair accessible boardwalk. The boardwalk, named in memory of Syd & Emily Watts, is level with secure handrails that provide support for those who need it, as well as allowing children to run free. In wintertime the boardwalk is built high enough to provide year-round access out into the flooded fields. Interpretive signs with Hul’q’umi’num names line the boardwalk providing history and natural history information. Picnic tables are available, and the new Peninsula Co-op Talking Circle is now complete for classes or groups to gather and share knowledge about the area. There is a donation box near the entrance for contributions towards the ongoing volunteer maintenance - any amount helps!

Many of the boardwalk planks have been engraved to commemorate passed loved ones, supporters, and donors. You can find a map of the engraved boards here. For more information about acquiring an engraved board please visit our donate page.
